Chandigarh, June 1
Punjab Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and launched efforts to arrest Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia and several others accused of creating a disturbance at Majitha police station in Amritsar and attempting to free a detainee from police custody.
According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday, when Majithia and a group of supporters allegedly entered the police station and attempted to secure the release of Jobanpreet Singh, who had been taken into custody in connection with a case registered at Majitha police station.
Police officials said an FIR has been registered and raids are underway to apprehend those involved. Authorities alleged that the group forcibly entered the premises, confronted police personnel, damaged official records, and attempted to interfere with the lawful detention of the accused.
Addressing reporters, Amritsar Rural police officials confirmed that teams visited Majithia’s residence as part of the investigation, but he was not present at the time.
Senior police officers stated that a Special Investigation Team headed by an officer of superintendent rank has been formed to investigate the matter. They maintained that legal action would be taken against all individuals found responsible, irrespective of their position or political standing.
Police further claimed that officers on duty were obstructed while performing their duties and that efforts were made to remove the detainee from custody. However, officials said they retained control of the situation and kept the accused in custody.
The Shiromani Akali Dal has strongly rejected the allegations and described the case as politically motivated. Party leaders alleged that Jobanpreet Singh, who served as a polling agent for the SAD during the recent civic body elections, was detained in a fabricated case.
Majithia and his supporters have maintained that they intervened after learning of Jobanpreet Singh’s detention and questioned the circumstances of his detention.
The investigation is continuing, with police working to identify and arrest all individuals allegedly involved in the incident. Further action will depend on the SIT’s findings and the progress of the ongoing inquiry.
