Amritsar, May 27
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has alleged that a Special Investigation Team of the Punjab Police probing the disappearance of 328 saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib is overstepping its mandate and interfering in the internal functioning of the apex Sikh religious body.
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said the committee has cooperated with the investigation from the beginning and provided all necessary information and assistance in line with the directives of the Akal Takht. However, he claimed that the SIT was now seeking details unrelated to the original investigation.
In a statement, Dhami alleged that the SIT had sought information regarding the SGPC’s financial accounts, bank transactions, and other financial records, which he said did not fall within the scope of the probe into the missing saroops.
He also claimed that the investigation team had sought details regarding agreements signed with private channels ETC and G Next Media for Gurbani Kirtan broadcasts, despite these matters having no connection to the case.
Dhami further alleged that information already submitted to the SIT was repeatedly being sought again through fresh communications. He said the nature of the queries raised concerns about whether the investigation was moving beyond its intended purpose.
The SGPC chief said any attempt to undermine the constitutional status of the Sikh community’s premier religious institution would not be acceptable.
The case related to the disappearance of 328 saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was registered by Amritsar Police in December 2025.
