Chandigarh, May 15
Punjab will carry out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls from June 25, with officials saying the exercise will be conducted in a “completely transparent manner”. Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Anindita Mitra said the Election Commission of India had issued a notification directing the revision of voter lists across the state. Under the exercise, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door verification of voters between June 25 and July 24, 2026. More than 24,000 BLOs, along with supervisors and electoral officers, have been deployed for the process. Officials said each BLO would oversee around 300 households and nearly 1,200 voters on average.
Training and preparatory work for the revision exercise will take place between June 15 and June 24. Mitra said the aim of the exercise was to ensure that all eligible citizens were included in the electoral rolls while removing ineligible or duplicate entries. She warned that holding duplicate voter registrations is an offence under Indian law and can lead to imprisonment of up to one year.
Officials said all voters in Punjab would be required to submit forms as part of the revision process.
According to the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, voter mapping has already been completed for more than 179 million voters, accounting for nearly 84% of the electorate. Rural areas have recorded higher progress than urban centres.
The draft electoral roll will be published on July 31, while claims and objections can be submitted until August 30. The final electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on October 1, 2026.
Mitra also clarified that Aadhaar cards would only be accepted as proof of identity and not as proof of citizenship during the exercise. Political parties have been asked to appoint Booth Level Agents to assist with the revision process, with a meeting scheduled on May 15 to brief parties on the exercise.
