Shimla, May 14
A controversy has surfaced in Shimla after a video alleging illegal parking charges from tourists went viral on social media. The video claims that Rs 800 was charged for just one hour of bike parking in the city.
In the viral clip, a tourist is seen accusing the parking staff of charging excessive, arbitrary fees. The incident has sparked online criticism over alleged overcharging at parking facilities in the hill station.
Municipal Commissioner Bhupender Attri said parking rates in Shimla have already been fixed by the Municipal Corporation, and no operator is allowed to charge beyond the approved rates.
He said strict legal action would be taken against the contractor or employees concerned if any violation is found during the investigation. The commissioner added that authorities would examine the matter immediately upon receiving a formal complaint. Illegal overcharging at parking sites has remained a recurring issue in Shimla due to limited parking space and heavy tourist inflow, though concerns about unchecked practices persist.
