The Punjab State and Chandigarh (UT) Human Rights Commission has formed a specialised 10-member core group to tackle rising concerns over drug abuse and gangster activity in Punjab and Chandigarh, as authorities step up efforts to address organised crime and protect vulnerable communities. The decision was taken during a meeting at the commission’s office in Chandigarh led by Justice Gurbir Singh and Padma Shri awardee Jitender Singh Shunty on Thursday. The panel said there was an urgent need for a coordinated and result-oriented response to the growing influence of drug trafficking networks and organised gangs in the region.

Officials said the newly formed group would focus on identifying the root causes of drug addiction and organised crime, while also exploring ways to break supply chains and criminal influence networks.

The discussions also centred on developing both short-term and long-term preventive measures, alongside policy recommendations aimed at reducing the social impact of drugs and gang violence.

The commission said experts and participants exchanged views on strengthening institutional responses and ensuring a broader strategy involving prevention, monitoring and rehabilitation.

It added that young people and vulnerable sections of society were increasingly at risk from the spread of narcotics and criminal networks, making coordinated intervention essential.

The commission described the creation of the core group as a proactive move designed to prevent human rights violations linked to drugs and gangsterism, while ensuring protection for victims and the wider public.

The panel reiterated its commitment to safeguarding human dignity and promoting a safer environment across Punjab and Chandigarh.
