Chandigarh, April 28
A blast on a railway track near the Shambhu area in Punjab’s Patiala district has been confirmed as an attempted detonation, police said on Tuesday. The explosion occurred around 10 pm on a freight corridor track near the Shambhu Ambala section, damaging the railway line.
Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma said the person attempting to carry out the detonation died at the spot. The body was recovered in a severely damaged condition. “We initially received information about a low-intensity explosion near the Shambhu Haryana border. On reaching the spot, it was found to be an attempted detonation,” Sharma said.
Providing further details on the Rajpura railway track blast, Sharma said it was a low-intensity bomb blast and that an individual died at the scene while attempting to plant the device. “We are investigating this matter, and no accused person will be spared,” he added.
He said the individual died during the attempt and that evidence collected from the site has led to a detailed investigation. Police have recovered a SIM card along with other forensic material. “After collecting scientific evidence, including a SIM card, a technical investigation has been initiated. We expect to uncover the entire conspiracy soon,” he said.
The Government Railway Police, Railway Protection Force, and other agencies are jointly investigating the incident to trace possible links and identify any wider network involved.
The incident comes months after a similar blast on a freight corridor track in Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib district, which had damaged a train engine and injured a loco pilot. Authorities are now focusing on strengthening surveillance and ensuring railway security as the investigation progresses.
