Asha Bhosle, the legendary singer who carved out a distinct musical identity beyond the towering legacy of her sister, has died at the age of 92.

Doctors said she died on Sunday due to multiple organ failure. She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai a day earlier with a chest infection and exhaustion, according to her family.

Bhosle’s life in music stretched across more than eight decades, making her one of the longest-performing singers in global music history. From her first recording at the age of 10 for a Marathi film, she went on to sing more than 12,000 songs in multiple Indian languages.

Often mentioned alongside her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar, who died in 2022 at the same age, Bhosle nevertheless built a voice and style uniquely her own. While the two sisters dominated Hindi film music for decades, Bhosle’s range set her apart — moving effortlessly between playful cabaret numbers, romantic duets, and deeply emotive ghazals.

She could bring infectious energy to songs like Aaja Aaja and Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, while also capturing longing and melancholy in tracks such as Chain Se Humko Kabhi and Dil Cheez Kya Hai. Her ghazals in Umrao Jaan remain among her most celebrated works and earned her a National Film Award.

Her collaborations shaped eras of Hindi cinema — first with composer O P Nayyar, known for his rhythmic, lively compositions, and later with R D Burman, whose experimental soundscapes found a perfect match in her adaptable voice. Burman later became her husband.

Born on 8 September 1935 in Sangli, Maharashtra, Bhosle was introduced to music by her father, Dinanath Mangeshkar. Music ran deep in the family: alongside Lata and Asha, their sisters Usha and Meena were also musicians, while their brother Hridaynath became a noted composer.

Despite early personal challenges — including a young marriage at 16 to Ganpatrao Bhosle — she continued to pursue music with remarkable resilience, eventually redefining what it meant to be a playback singer in India.

Her voice became synonymous with some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic faces, from Meena Kumari and Madhubala to Zeenat Aman, Kajol and Urmila Matondkar, as well as stars of South Indian cinema.

Even in later years, Bhosle remained active. In 2023, she marked her 90th birthday with a live concert in Dubai, celebrating a career that had spanned generations.

Beyond music, she was also an entrepreneur, running a chain of restaurants bearing her name in Dubai and the UK.

Honoured with some of India’s highest civilian awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, Bhosle leaves behind a legacy that not only defined playback singing but continually reinvented it.
