New Delhi, April 10

A judge of the Allahabad High Court has stepped down from his post after facing impeachment proceedings linked to a controversial cash recovery case. Justice Yashwant Varma submitted his resignation to Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure. In a brief letter, the judge wrote that he was resigning “with deep anguish”, choosing not to elaborate on the circumstances behind his decision. He described it as an honour to have served in the high court.

The resignation follows a long-running controversy that began last year, when partially burnt bundles of currency notes were reportedly found at his official residence in New Delhi. The discovery triggered scrutiny and led to calls for accountability. After the incident, Justice Varma had been transferred from the Delhi High Court back to Allahabad, even as questions around the case persisted.

The Impeachment proceedings had since been initiated, marking a rare and serious step in India’s judicial system. His resignation now raises questions about whether those proceedings will continue.

The case has drawn attention to issues of transparency and trust within the judiciary, with legal experts and observers closely watching how the matter unfolds.
