Himachal Police showcase artistic side at Gaiety Theatre

The image of the police is usually associated with khaki uniforms, batons and discipline. However, the Himachal Pradesh Police have challenged that perception by bringing the hidden artistic side of its personnel to the public. A three-day painting exhibition by police personnel has been organised at the Gaiety Theatre in Shimla. The exhibition was inaugurated by Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan in the presence of Acting Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari.

Praising the talent of the police personnel, Surender Chauhan said that this “second face” of the police is truly refreshing. He said the artists had portrayed the social evil of “chitta” (drug abuse) in a deeply moving manner through their paintings. The artworks also reflected Himachal Pradesh’s rich culture and a strong message of environmental conservation.

The mayor announced that police artists would be given a special space in the upcoming Shimla Haat so that their work can receive a permanent platform.

Acting DGP Ashok Tiwari said it is important for the public to understand that police personnel are not only trained to use batons and guns, but also possess emotions and creativity. He said the department has been encouraging personnel skilled in handicrafts, oil painting and watercolour art over the past few months.

Responding positively to the mayor’s suggestion, the DGP said that if police artists wish to sell their creations commercially, the department would seriously consider the proposal and take an appropriate decision.
