Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Uttar Pradesh on March 28 to inaugurate the first phase of Noida International Airport in Jewar, in what the government is calling a major boost to India’s aviation infrastructure. Modi is scheduled to tour the terminal building of the airport in Gautam Buddha Nagar at around 11:30am before formally opening Phase I of the project at noon and addressing a public gathering.

The airport, developed as the second international airport for the Delhi National Capital Region, is expected to complement Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and help ease congestion while expanding passenger capacity in the region. Built as one of India’s largest greenfield airport projects, the first phase of Noida International Airport has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹11,200 crore under a public-private partnership model.

In its initial phase, the airport will be able to handle 12 million passengers annually, with plans to expand capacity to 70 million passengers a year when fully developed.

Officials say the airport includes a 3,900-metre runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft, along with modern navigation and lighting systems designed to support round-the-clock operations in all weather conditions.

The project also includes a cargo hub with an integrated cargo terminal, logistics zones and a 40-acre maintenance, repair and overhaul facility. The cargo infrastructure is designed to handle more than 250,000 metric tonnes annually in the first phase, with scope for significant expansion.

Positioned along the Yamuna Expressway, the airport has been planned as a multi-modal transport hub with future links to road, rail, metro and regional transit systems.

The government says the airport has been designed as a sustainable, net-zero emissions facility and incorporates architectural features inspired by traditional Indian ghats and havelis.
