Meerut (UP), March 12

A man has been arrested for allegedly posing as an IAS officer and intimidating people by misusing the false identity, officials said on Thursday.

According to the police, the accused had been misleading people in the area for a long time by claiming to be a senior government officer.

The arrest was made in the Nauchandi police station area late Wednesday night after the police received information that a man was creating a disturbance in Phoolbagh colony. A police team reached the spot and detained him.

During questioning, the man identified himself as Rahul Kaushik and claimed that he was a 2008-batch IAS officer. However, verification revealed that the claim was false.

Additional SP, City, Ayush Vikram said police had earlier received complaints that Kaushik had been introducing himself as an IAS officer and attempting to exert pressure on police officials and other government employees by calling them on official numbers.

The police also found that the accused had installed a board outside his house displaying titles such as IAS, deputy secretary and joint secretary to create the impression that he was a real officer. The board has been seized, officials said.

The police said the accused also has a criminal history and was arrested in 2013 in connection with a case involving the rape of a minor.

A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the BNS, and further questioning is underway to determine how long he had been misleading people by posing as a government officer, the police said.
