Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi has rejected allegations that he made remarks against any caste or community, saying a false propaganda campaign was being run against him. Speaking to reporters, Channi said he followed the philosophy of the Gurus, which teaches recognition of humanity above caste. He stressed that he had never made any comment targeting a particular caste or community in any meeting.
Describing himself as a “son of the soil of Chamkaur Sahib”, Channi said it was impossible for him to speak against any community. He said attempts were being made to misrepresent his views for political reasons. The Congress leader also thanked his party for entrusting him with major responsibilities. He said he had used these positions to raise the voices of ordinary people, both in government and in Parliament.
Channi said he had consistently spoken about the issues related to Punjab, including the concerns of farmers and agricultural labourers. He added that he had raised these matters even in the face of opposition and anger from the Prime Minister, and claimed he had not allowed action to be taken against any farmer.
Channi argued that taking everyone along would strengthen the party and pave the way for forming the next government.
