US, India discuss nuclear energy and trade ties

New Delhi, January 14

The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has spoken with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, with the two leaders discussing civil nuclear cooperation, trade negotiations and regional developments. According to a readout issued by the US Department of State on Wednesday, the call included an exchange of New Year greetings, during which Rubio congratulated India on enacting the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India bill.

The secretary expressed interest in using the legislation to strengthen US–India civil nuclear cooperation, expand opportunities for American companies and advance shared energy security goals. He also highlighted the importance of securing critical mineral supply chains.

The readout said the two ministers discussed ongoing bilateral trade agreement negotiations and underlined their shared interest in deepening economic cooperation. They also exchanged views on regional developments, reaffirming both countries’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
