Army hospital performs India’s first 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography with iStent

Doctors at the Ophthalmology Department of Army Hospital (Research & Referral) have carried out India’s first 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography combined with an iStent procedure, marking a major advance in glaucoma treatment. Hospital officials said the procedure was performed using a new stand-mounted Spectralis imaging system along with a 3D operating microscope, allowing surgeons to visualise the eye’s aqueous fluid pathways in real time while carrying out minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.
Glaucoma, one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness, often progresses without early symptoms, making timely and precise intervention critical. The new technique enables targeted treatment by offering surgeons clearer, live imaging during the operation, significantly improving surgical accuracy and patient outcomes.
The integration of 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography with iStent technology is the first of its kind in India and sets a new benchmark in intraoperative imaging and long-term glaucoma care.
Officials said the achievement places the Armed Forces Medical Services among leading global centres in advanced ophthalmic care, strengthening both patient safety and operational readiness within the armed forces community.
