Shimla, December 30
Himachal Pradesh is set to welcome the New Year with snowfall, as the weather department has issued an alert for deteriorating conditions from December 30 to January 2. The Meteorological Centre Shimla said an active western disturbance is likely to affect the state, bringing rain and snowfall across several regions. Light to moderate rain and snow are expected in high and mid-hill areas, while lower and plain regions may receive rainfall.
A yellow alert has been issued for December 31 and January 1, warning of rain and snowfall, particularly in higher reaches. Officials say the change in weather is also expected to trigger a sharp fall in temperatures, intensifying cold wave conditions across the state.
According to weather scientist Shobhit Katiyar, the weather is likely to remain unfavourable across the state on both days. “There are strong chances of snowfall in high and mid-mountain areas, while rain is expected in lower regions,” he said.
He added that temperatures could drop by 2 to 6 degrees Celsius following the activation of the western disturbance, increasing the impact of the cold wave in many parts of Himachal Pradesh.
