CM Sukhu announces fresh probe into IGMC case as resident doctors resume duty

Resident doctors in Himachal Pradesh have resumed duties after accepting assurances from the state government over the handling of a controversial case at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the government would constitute a new committee of senior doctors to re-examine the termination of Dr Raghav Narula. The panel will conduct a fresh review and submit its findings to the government.
Sukhu said the state did not intend to harm the career of any medical professional. He clarified that the termination was not ordered directly by the government but was carried out by the department on the basis of a report submitted by the hospital administration. “The government wants fairness and transparency. That is why a senior doctors’ committee is being formed to look into the matter again,” he said.
The Chief Minister accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of politicising the issue, claiming the opposition was divided in its stance. He said one BJP legislator had sided with the patient, another with the doctor, while the Leader of the Opposition, Jai Ram Thakur, had made contradictory statements.
“The BJP appears split into several factions. The government, however, is focused on public interest and uninterrupted health services,” Sukhu said, adding that responding daily to opposition remarks served little purpose. With resident doctors returning to work at Indira Gandhi Medical College, hospital services are expected to stabilise, providing relief to patients who had faced difficulties during the disruption.
