Punjab’s Forest and Wildlife Preservation Department has introduced special winter arrangements at the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, commonly known as Chhatbir Zoo, to safeguard animals and birds from cold weather. The measures, overseen by Forest Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, aim to ensure a hygienic and protective environment across enclosures as temperatures fall.
Carnivores including tigers, lions and leopards have been provided room heaters and heat convectors in night shelters, with windows sealed using polythene or fibre sheets and grass thatch. Additional temperature control has been arranged for younger and older animals.
Herbivores have been given temporary waterproof shelters, along with bedding made of paddy straw and wheat husk to keep enclosures warm and dry.
Bird enclosures have been covered with fibre cloth, jute mats and polythene sheets to protect against wind chill and rain. Nesting areas have been lined with straw and husk, while cage fronts remain foldable to allow sunlight when required.
In the reptile section, oil-filled heaters and UV lamps have been installed to maintain warmth without disturbing humidity levels. Turtles and tortoises have also been provided aquarium water heaters with circulation systems.
Officials said the arrangements would remain in place throughout the winter to ensure animal welfare.
