IGMC resident doctors threaten strike over colleague’s termination

Resident doctors at Indira Gandhi Medical College have announced an indefinite strike from December 27 if the state government does not withdraw the termination of a doctor accused in an altercation with a patient. In a statement issued on Friday, the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) at IGMC said the decision followed a general body meeting held after the dismissal order. The association said doctors were deeply concerned about their safety at the workplace and alleged that due process had not been followed before terminating the doctor.
The RDA said the incident involved an alleged assault by a group inside the hospital premises, and claimed that resident doctors were increasingly facing violence and intimidation while on duty. It demanded the immediate revocation of the termination order, registration of cases against those involved in the assault, and enhanced security measures within the hospital.
According to the statement, the association has also sought strict action under relevant legal provisions and the installation and effective monitoring of CCTV cameras across the hospital campus to ensure the safety of healthcare workers.
The doctors warned that routine services, including outpatient departments, elective procedures and ward duties, would be suspended during the strike period, though emergency services would continue. They said patients could face inconvenience if the issue is not resolved swiftly. The hospital administration and the state government have not yet issued a detailed response to the RDA’s demands.
