CM Sukhu warns of ‘threats’ to constitutional institutions

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu delivered a pointed political message, warning that the constitutional framework Ambedkar envisioned was facing growing pressure. Speaking at a memorial event marking the death anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar in Shimla on Saturday, Sukhu described Ambedkar’s legacy as “central to India’s democratic fabric” and praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for “working consistently to safeguard the Constitution and its institutions”. In contrast, he accused the BJP of “eroding the very structures Ambedkar helped build”, sharpening an ongoing political battle over the future of constitutional protections.

Chief Minister Sukhu said Ambedkar’s contribution to India remained “immense and widely recognised”, particularly his lifelong work for the rights of marginalised communities at a time when caste discrimination was deeply entrenched. His vision, the Chief Minister said, continued to inspire contemporary struggles for equality and justice.

Himachal Pradesh Congress president Vinay Kumar, also present at the ceremony, echoed the sentiment. Describing Ambedkar’s role as “extraordinary”, he said the Congress party’s commitment to social empowerment was reflected in its leadership choices — including his own appointment as state party chief from a Scheduled Caste background.

The event formed part of nationwide observances for Mahaparinirvan Diwas, the annual day of remembrance dedicated to Ambedkar’s death anniversary.
