US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that he held a “very good” telephone conversation with China’s President Xi Jinping, discussing issues ranging from the Ukraine–Russia conflict to fentanyl trafficking and agricultural trade. In a post on social media, Trump said the two leaders had reviewed progress made since their meeting in South Korea three weeks earlier. He described a recent agricultural agreement as “very important” for American farmers and insisted relations between Washington and Beijing remained “extremely strong”.

According to Trump, President Xi invited him to visit Beijing in April — an invitation he said he had accepted. He added that he had also asked the Chinese leader to make a state visit to the United States later in the year. Both sides, he wrote, had agreed on the need for more frequent communication as they “set our sights on the big picture” and work to keep bilateral agreements updated and accurate.
