Mumbai, November 11
Widespread confusion gripped social media on Tuesday after rumours falsely claimed that veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra had died. The 89-year-old actor is currently admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital and is recovering, his wife and actor Hema Malini confirmed. She reacted after several news channels reported the news of Dharmendra’s death.
In a strong statement shared on social media, Malini called the false reports “unforgivable,” saying, “How can responsible channels spread false news about a person who is responding to treatment and recovering? This is extremely disrespectful and irresponsible. Please give due respect to the family and its need for privacy.” Their daughter, actor Esha Deol, also reassured fans, saying her father was stable and responding well to treatment.
Rumours about Dharmendra’s death gained traction after several prominent personalities, including Union Cabinet Ministers, mistakenly expressed condolences and paid tribute on social media platforms. Among them was Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who posted a message mourning the actor’s “demise” and praising his “remarkable contribution to Indian cinema.” The tweet was later deleted.
Dharmendra, often referred to as the “He-Man” of Bollywood, has been one of the most enduring stars in Indian cinema, known for his roles in classics such as Sholay, Phool Aur Patthar, and Chupke Chupke.
