Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday called on the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) to chart a “futuristic roadmap” that embraces cutting-edge technologies and anticipates evolving threats. Speaking at the 42nd ICG Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi, Rajnath Singh said modern warfare was now measured “in hours and seconds, not months,” with satellites, drones and sensors redefining conflict. Preparedness, adaptability and rapid response, he stressed, must guide the Coast Guard’s future strategy. He described the ICG as a “vital pillar of national security,” highlighting its dual role in guarding against external threats and tackling internal challenges such as smuggling, drug trafficking, illegal fishing and marine pollution.
The Defence Minister praised the force’s humanitarian record in disaster response and rescue operations, while noting its growing emphasis on women’s participation in leadership and frontline roles. He also underlined the government’s commitment to modernising the Coast Guard, pointing out that nearly 90% of its capital budget goes towards indigenous equipment. He linked maritime security directly with India’s economic well-being, stressing that disruptions in shipping lanes and energy infrastructure could have “cascading effects on national security and the economy alike.” The three-day conference, which runs until 30 September, brings together the Coast Guard’s senior leadership to deliberate on strategy and operational priorities amid rising maritime challenges in the Indian Ocean Region.
