Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, XAI, has filed a lawsuit against Apple, accusing the tech giant of unfairly favoring OpenAI’s ChatGPT in App Store rankings. Musk claims the bias makes it nearly impossible for competing AI applications to secure the top spot.
The legal move follows Musk’s public criticism of Apple’s app promotion practices. He has previously taken issue with the company for excluding his social media platform Twitter and AI chatbot, Grok, from its “Must Have” list, despite what he describes as their strong user engagement and popularity.
The dispute has also spilled into the open between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. In response to Musk’s accusations, Altman alleged that Musk uses his control of X to prioritize and promote his own ventures at the expense of rivals. Apple has yet to comment on the lawsuit or address Musk’s claims about its app ranking system. The case is likely to intensify an already heated debate over transparency and competition in the tech industry’s most influential marketplaces.
