Chandigarh, August 2
A day after prominent Punjab realtor Ranjit Singh Gill joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Punjab Vigilance Bureau raided his residence in Chandigarh and other two places. Gill, the owner of the influential Gillco Valley real estate group and a former leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, formally joined the BJP on Friday in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. The induction ceremony took place at Saini’s official residence in Chandigarh and was attended by senior Punjab BJP leaders.
The timing of the raid — less than 24 hours after Gill’s entry into the saffron party — has raised eyebrows in political circles. Gill had resigned from the Akali Dal roughly two weeks earlier. Gill had hinted at a “major political decision in the interest of Punjab and the Kharar constituency” in a social media post after quitting the Akali Dal. The Vigilance Bureau has not yet issued a statement.
According to Vigilance Bureau, the VB on Saturday conducted searches at three premises linked to real estate firm Gillco Developers as part of its ongoing investigation into a corruption case involving senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia.
The searches, carried out in locations across Punjab and Chandigarh, are tied to a First Information Report (FIR No. 22), registered on 25 June 2025 at the Bureau’s Flying Squad police station in SAS Nagar. Investigators say they have uncovered suspicious financial transactions running into crores of rupees between Gillco Developers and various entities connected to Majithia.
“These transactions came to light during the ongoing probe, and the Bureau acted in accordance with due legal procedure to obtain further evidence,” said an official spokesperson for the Vigilance Bureau. He described the searches as part of “meticulous investigative work” following the registration of the FIR.
While the specific nature of the financial dealings remains under wraps, the Bureau has confirmed the seizure of incriminating documents, electronic devices, and other material evidence. The spokesperson added that operations are still underway and that all procedures were followed “strictly in accordance with the law”.
Bikram Singh Majithia, a prominent political figure and former cabinet minister, wss already held and in judicial custody for financial irregularities.
