Zirakpur, May 29
Punjab Local Government Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh on Thursday announced that the Zirakpur Municipal Council will soon be upgraded to a Municipal Corporation. The move, he said, is aimed at strengthening civic governance amid the town’s rapid urban growth. During an early morning visit to Zirakpur, Dr. Ravjot Singh underscored the urgent need for a more robust administrative structure to manage essential services such as water supply, sewage treatment, and sanitation. “Zirakpur has expanded rapidly and now requires a larger, more empowered civic body,” he said.
The minister directed local MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa to submit a formal proposal to the Department of Local Government to initiate the process. Dr. Ravjot Singh confirmed that the transition would be implemented in time for the upcoming Municipal Corporation elections. While inspecting various parts of the city, including Old Kalka Road and Dhakauli, the minister expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of cleanliness. He instructed officials to increase the number of sanitation workers to address the situation.
Dr. Singh also raised concerns over the choked condition of Sukhna Choe, which carries wastewater from neighbouring Chandigarh. He instructed the Municipal Council to work with the Drainage Department to clean the water channel before the monsoon, warning that clogged drains could result in flooding. He urged residents not to dispose of waste in the choe.
In Baltana, the minister visited the local furniture market and announced a high-level bridge on the Sukhna Choe at a cost of ₹5.96 crore. The project aims to prevent seasonal overflow and ease disruptions for residents during the monsoon.
“The poor state of the roads and streets is not a healthy sign for the community,” Dr. Singh said, calling for urgent upgrades in cleanliness and infrastructure.
