Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, on Wednesday voiced concern over reports of violence erupting in West Bengal amid protests against recent amendments to the Waqf Act. “One thing is very disturbing – the violence that is taking place. If the matter is pending here, it should not happen,” the CJI remarked at the conclusion of a Supreme Court hearing on a series of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.

The three-judge bench, comprising Chief Justice Khanna along with Justices Sanjay Kumar and K V Viswanathan, indicated a willingness to issue notices and pass a short order in response to the challenges. However, the Centre and several state governments requested additional time to file their submissions before any interim ruling. The court is now scheduled to resume the hearing at 2 pm on Thursday.
