The Tamil Nadu government has replaced the Indian Rupee symbol (₹) with a Tamil script equivalent in its Budget for 2025-26. The previous Budget had featured the standard Indian currency symbol, but this year’s change was highlighted after Chief Minister MK Stalin shared the new logo on X.

The move comes amid ongoing tensions between the ruling DMK and the BJP-led central government over language policies, particularly the three-language formula under the National Education Policy, which the DMK has opposed as a form of ‘Hindi imposition.’ No formal notification has been issued by the state government regarding the change. However, DMK leader Saravanan Annadurai defended the decision, stating, “There is nothing illegal about it. This is not a showdown. We prioritise Tamil, and that is why the government went ahead with this.”
