Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday announced plans to set up the Surjit Patar centre for ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Guru Nanak Dev University. Chairing a function to honor the late writer, Mann said the centre will feature state-of-the-art technology, emphasizing full support for the university in this initiative.
The Chief Minister also announced the creation of an award in Surjit Patar’s memory, aimed at encouraging budding writers. “Appointments in universities are focused on promoting academics, not groupism,” he said, stressing the importance of education in these institutions.
Mann paid floral tributes to Patar, calling his death a significant loss to Punjabi literature. He highlighted Patar’s role in promoting Punjabi language, literature, and culture, and compared him to English poet Keats. “His contributions cemented communal harmony and brotherhood,” Mann noted.
The Chief Minister reiterated the state’s commitment to promoting the Punjabi language, with over Rs 350 crore allocated to Punjabi University Patiala. He urged students to embrace the language to preserve their cultural heritage. Mann also emphasized the sacrifices of Punjab’s martyrs, encouraging the youth to serve the country selflessly.
On the occasion of Maghi, Mann extended best wishes and paid homage to the 40 Muktas who sacrificed their lives in the Battle of Khidrana, now known as Sri Muktsar Sahib.
