A US military aircraft carrying 104 Indians, including 13 children, landed in Punjab on Wednesday amid a crackdown on illegal immigration under President Donald Trump, according to media reports. The C-17 military transport plane took off from San Antonio, Texas, and arrived at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at 1:59 pm, carrying 79 men and 25 women. Officials from the police and civil administration were present to receive the deportees, the news outlet India Today reported.
According to The Indian Express, the highest number of deportees—33 each—were from Gujarat and Haryana, followed by 30 from Punjab. Three were from Maharashtra, while Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh had two each.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab chief Aman Arora questioned why the deportees were flown specifically to Amritsar, despite hailing from multiple states. “When deportees are from across the country, why was Amritsar chosen?” Arora asked at a press briefing in Bathinda.
Trump had launched a crackdown on undocumented immigrants on his first day in office on January 20, leading to the deportation of thousands of individuals, including Indian nationals.
