The mega auction for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected to take place either in late November or early December. Historically, IPL mega auctions occur at four-year intervals, giving franchises the opportunity to overhaul their squads. The IPL 2024 mini-auction was held in Dubai and for the 2025 auction, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Riyadh are being explored as potential alternative venues in the Middle East.
In 2022, teams were allowed to retain up to four players, but with the current three-year cycle nearing its end, discussions among franchises are heating up over the retention rules. The last mega auction, originally slated for 2021, was delayed by a year due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, resulting in an extension of player contracts by one additional year. BCCI is expected to announce the date for the auction in the coming days.
