New Delhi, April 3

US President Donald Trump has imposed a 27 percent reciprocal tariff on Indian imports, a move that could strain economic ties between the two nations. Announced during his ‘Liberation Day’ speech, the decision comes as a setback for New Delhi, which had been seeking tariff relief, the news outlet India Today reported.

From April 9, all Indian goods entering the US will face the new levy, leaving businesses scrambling to assess the impact. The benchmark Nifty index opened lower on Thursday, falling nearly 0.3% in morning trade. According to The Hindustan Times, speaking at the White House Rose Garden, Trump justified the tariffs, claiming India imposes higher trade barriers on American goods. He recalled a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying: “He is a great friend, but I told him—India charges us 52%, so we will charge them half of that—27%.”
