District administration highlights welfare and social security schemes
Lahaul-Spiti: The Lahaul-Spiti district administration on Wednesday observed International Day of Older Persons at the old Circuit House, with Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhardana highlighting the need to ensure dignity, security, healthcare and social protection for senior citizens.
The event was organised jointly by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment and the District Welfare Department. Project Officer, Integrated Tribal Development Project, Ashwani Kumar, and Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Keylong, were also present.
Addressing the gathering, Bhardana described senior citizens as an invaluable part of society, saying their experience, knowledge and guidance could benefit younger generations. She said the observance aimed to raise awareness of the health, safety, dignity and rights of older persons and promote an environment conducive to their well-being.
Bhardana said the government was implementing various schemes and programmes for the welfare and social security of senior citizens. She said the district administration was working to ensure that eligible beneficiaries received the benefits of these schemes effectively.
She also urged people from all sections of society to maintain respect, sensitivity, and support for senior citizens.
District Welfare Officer Sanjay Kumar presented the programme outline. Senior citizens from different parts of the district, along with members of mahila mandals and self-help groups, participated in the event.
During the programme, senior citizens shared their experiences and discussed issues concerning older persons.
A health check-up camp was also organised by the Health and Ayush departments. Senior citizens attending the event underwent medical examinations and were provided health-related advice and information.
The programme concluded with an emphasis on respecting senior citizens and protecting their rights and dignity.
