Mixed 4×400-m relay quartet adds silver as India’s Asian Games tally rises to 17
Chandigarh, September 24
Seema Kumari won bronze in the women’s 10,000 m at the Asian Games on Thursday, ending India’s 16-year wait for a medal in the event. India’s last women’s 10,000 m medals came at the 2010 Guangzhou Games, where Preeja Sreedharan won gold and Kavita Raut silver.
The mixed 4×400-m relay quartet of Manu TS, MR Poovamma, Jay Kumar and Kiran Pahal added a silver medal, taking India’s overall tally to 17.
Asha Ilango finished fourth in the women’s triple jump with a best effort of 13.89m, while Niharika Vashisht finished fifth with 13.64 m.
In fencing, CA Bhavani Devi defeated Mongolia’s Oulen Tugsjargan in the round of 32 before losing 5-15 to China’s Rao Xueyi in the round of 16. Shreya Gupta received a bye into the round of 16 but lost 6-15 to South Korea’s Jeon Ha-young.
In canoe sprint, Megha Pradeep finished fourth in the women’s canoe single 200 m semifinal and failed to qualify for the final. Soniya Devi and Parvathy Geetha also failed to progress from the women’s kayak double 500-m semifinal.
In rowing, Balraj Panwar finished fourth in the men’s single sculls final, while Satnam Singh and Salman Khan won bronze in the men’s double sculls. Arvind Singh, Kulwinder Singh, Navdeep Singh and Jakar Khan finished fifth in the men’s quadruple sculls.
India defeated Chinese Taipei 37-21 in the men’s kabaddi Group A match to finish on top and advance to the semifinals.
The Indian men’s hockey team registered an 8-2 win over South Korea in its Pool A match, its third consecutive victory.
In boxing, Sakshi Chaudhary lost 3-2 on a split decision to Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova in the women’s 51 kg round of 16. Parveen advanced to the quarterfinals in the women’s 65-kg category after receiving a walkover from Tajikistan’s Malika Nozimova.
