Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to flag off event from Chandigarh Club

Chandigarh, September 26

The SK Tricity Marathon will be held at the Chandigarh Club on September 27 to promote fitness and digital safety among residents of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria will flag off the event, with Olympian Saina Nehwal and Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi attending as special participants.

Organised by Sanskriti Yuva Sanstha and IIEMR, Indian Institute of Event Management, with support from SK Finance, the marathon will carry the theme “Run for Safe Digital Bharat”.

Nehwal, is a former world No. 1 badminton player, who won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She has also won a silver at the 2015 World Championship and a Commonwealth Games gold medal besides several other international titles. Her participation, along with that of sportspersons, police officials and city residents, will help take the message directly to the youth.

The organisers said the event will combine fitness with an anti-drug and cyber awareness campaign which will create awareness about online fraud, digital fraud and cybercrime. The campaign will also encourage people to maintain a healthy lifestyle while remaining vigilant in the digital space. 

Chandigarh Police SSP Kanwardeep Kaur will also be present at the marathon, as her participation is expected to further strengthen the marathon as an anti-drug and cyber awareness campaign. Organiser Mukesh Mishra said the objective was to spread awareness about fitness and digital safety across age groups. He said digital fraud can affect people from different sections of society, making wider awareness important.

The SSP praised the marathon, describing it as an effective medium for creating public awareness against drugs and cybercrime. She said Chandigarh Police was working with a zero-tolerance policy against drugs. Along with action against drug abuse, continuous campaigns were being conducted to create awareness among youngsters and the general public. She also appealed to people to actively participate in the campaign against drugs.

The marathon will have 3-km, 10-km and 21.097-km categories, with participation open to children, youth, senior citizens and fitness enthusiasts. Deepak Sharma, Executive President of Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha who is also associated with the event, said cybercrime has become a major challenge. He said a mass marathon can help spread awareness about fitness and digital safety.

The organisers appealed to the residents of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula to participate in the event.
