Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has called for a special “Kisan Milni” to be held at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, on April 12. The event aims to educate farmers on sustainable paddy cultivation techniques ahead of the sowing season. Chairing a meeting at his official residence, Mann said the Milni would promote awareness about water-efficient transplant methods and the use of high-yielding, PAU-approved seed varieties. The effort is part of a broader state campaign to modernise farming practices and mitigate environmental impact.

The Chief Minister emphasised that the event would also serve to inform farmers about key policy changes, including the state’s decision to advance the paddy sowing window to June 1. The shift is intended to reduce the risk of high moisture content in the crop at the time of sale, which has previously complicated procurement processes in October. The state will be divided into agricultural zones to implement phased sowing more effectively, Mann said, with detailed timelines to be announced shortly. The event will feature agricultural experts offering guidance on best practices.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to farmer welfare, Mann added that strict measures would be taken to prevent the sale of counterfeit seeds. “No one indulging in such crimes will be spared,” he warned.
