Patiala, July 8
Patiala-based social activist Professor Sumer Seera has alleged that unidentified persons opened fire near the Khanna bridge before demanding Rs 50 lakh in ransom through a Messenger video call later that night. He said he has lodged a complaint with Khanna Police and has sought strict action against those responsible.
Speaking about the incident, Professor Seera said he had traveled to Rara Sahib to visit an ailing friend. While returning, he alleged that an unidentified man carrying a country-made pistol fired three shots into the air in his direction on a bridge near Khanna.
“I initially thought they were robbers attempting to loot me,” he said.
Professor Seera further alleged that while he was at home later that night, he received a Messenger video call during which the caller demanded Rs 50 lakh as ransom.
He said a formal complaint had been submitted at Khanna Police Station and that he was returning to Khanna to pursue the matter further.
Professor Seera urged the authorities to arrest those involved, alleging that such individuals were attempting to disturb peace and law and order in Punjab.
The incident comes shortly after Professor Seera distanced himself from the Shiromani Akali Dal. He had been associated with the party for about 2 years and was appointed as one of its vice presidents by Sukhbir Singh Badal at the time of his joining. He recently announced that he had severed ties with the party.
Police had not issued any official statement on the allegations at the time of reporting.
