Family Blocks Rambagh Bridge Over Pregnant Woman’s Death
Kalka: A pregnant woman died under suspicious circumstances at Handiya Mohalla in Kalka late on Tuesday night. Her family members staged a protest at Rambagh Bridge on Wednesday, demanding action against those they held responsible for her death.
According to the account provided by the family, the deceased, Gauri, had married Nitin in a love marriage around one-and-a-half years ago. Her elder sister, Bharti, alleged that Gauri had faced repeated harassment over dowry from her husband and his family since the marriage.
Bharti further alleged that Nitin used to assault her sister. She said Gauri had been beaten by her husband on Tuesday, following which she went to her grandmother’s house.
However, Bharti alleged that members of Gauri’s in-laws’ family later persuaded her to return to their home. The family subsequently received information that Gauri had died, she said.
Bharti also confirmed that her sister was pregnant at the time of her death.
The death triggered anger among Gauri’s relatives, who blocked Rambagh Bridge on Wednesday to demand action against those allegedly responsible. The protest disrupted movement at the bridge until the police intervened.
The Kalka police station SHO Ajit Singh reached the spot after receiving information about the protest. He assured the family that appropriate action would be taken, following which the relatives lifted the blockade.
Vikas Anand, the investigating officer in the case, said the police had registered a case against Nitin and other members of his family based on a complaint filed by Gauri’s sister.
Anand said the matter was under investigation.
The allegations of dowry harassment and assault have been made by the deceased woman’s family. The police have registered a case following the complaint, but the investigation is continuing.
Further details about the circumstances surrounding Gauri’s death were not provided in the source account.
