Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed on Wednesday for a four-day visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives, expressing confidence that the trip will strengthen India’s ties with both nations. In a statement released before his departure, Prime Minister Modi said, “I am embarking on a visit to the UK and the Maldives from 23 to 26 July.”
Highlighting the importance of India-UK relations, he noted that the two countries share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has witnessed “significant progress in recent years.” “Our collaboration spans a wide range of sectors – trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, education, research, sustainability, health, and people-to-people ties,” the Prime Minister added.
He said he would meet with newly elected UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to discuss ways to deepen the economic partnership, “aimed at fostering prosperity, growth and job creation in both countries.” Prime Minister is also scheduled to call on His Majesty King Charles III during the visit.
Following his engagements in London, Prime Minister Modi will travel to the Maldives at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu to participate in events marking 60 years of Maldivian independence.
“This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries,” the Prime Minister said, adding that his discussions in Malé would focus on strengthening the Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership and bolstering cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region. “The hoped the visit would yield ‘tangible outcomes’ and reaffirm India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First Policy,” the Prime Minister said.
