Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s Principal Media Advisor Naresh Chauhan on Wednesday hit back at Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur over allegations made against him and his family, challenging the BJP leader to make public any evidence supporting his claims.
Addressing the media, Chauhan said political differences were part of a healthy democracy, but dragging personal matters into political discourse was inappropriate. He alleged that Jai Ram Thakur had linked a land-related transaction with the alleged murderous attack on his son and said such claims should be backed by facts and documentary evidence.
“If allegations are being made, they must be supported by proof. Making baseless accusations does not suit the stature of a senior political leader,” Chauhan said, adding that political parties should focus on issues and policies rather than personal attacks.
He also criticized the BJP’s protest march, describing it as a political compulsion arising out of internal factionalism within the party. According to Chauhan, the BJP was resorting to protests to manage its internal differences rather than addressing substantive public issues.
Rejecting the BJP’s allegations of phone tapping and politically motivated action by the state government, Chauhan said the opposition should first explain its own political functioning instead of leveling unsubstantiated charges.
Taking a swipe at the BJP, he said the party should clarify its position on the factionalism within its ranks instead of making what he described as baseless allegations against the Congress government.
