Lahaul-Spiti, June 9

The District Tourism Development Office in Lahaul-Spiti has made it mandatory for tourists and local residents to obtain permits before travelling to Rohtang Pass from the Koksar side, officials said.

District Tourism Development Officer Kunika Eckers stated that the National Green Tribunal has fixed a daily limit of 1,200 vehicles travelling to Rohtang Pass, and all tourists and drivers must comply with the regulation.

She said the restriction has been implemented to ensure environmental conservation and proper traffic management in the ecologically sensitive Rohtang region. Only vehicles within the prescribed daily limit and carrying valid permits will be allowed to proceed towards the pass.

“Any tourist or member of the public attempting to travel to Rohtang Pass from Koksar or Gulaba without a valid permit will be stopped at the respective police check posts,” Eckers said.

She added that travellers without permits may face unnecessary inconvenience and delays during their journey.

The tourism officer urged all visitors and vehicle owners to plan their trips in advance and apply online for permits through the official portal, www.rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in. Travellers should begin their journey to Rohtang Pass only after the permit has been issued, she said.

According to officials, the online permit system has been introduced to provide tourists with a smoother and more organised travel experience while also regulating the number of vehicles entering the Rohtang area.

The administration has appealed to all visitors to follow the rules and cooperate with authorities to maintain environmental balance and orderly movement in the region.
