Ramayana episode highlights faith, humility and devotion
Chandigarh: The Kevat episode from the Ramayana was staged at the Sector 48 Ramlila in Chandigarh on Wednesday, highlighting devotion, humility and selfless service through the story of Lord Ram, Sita, and Lakshman crossing the Ganga during their exile.
According to the episode, when the three reached the riverbank, they needed a boat to cross. Kevat, the boatman, insisted on washing Lord Ram’s feet before letting him board. He believed the dust from the Lord’s feet might transform his boat, adding a touch of innocence and warmth to the performance.
Lord Ram accepted Kevat’s request, and the boatman ferried him, Sita and Lakshman across the river. The exchange portrayed the bond between a devotee and the divine, with the characters’ performances conveying the depth of Kevat’s faith and surrender.
The audience responded with chants of “Jai Shri Ram”, creating a devotional atmosphere during the enactment.
The Sector 48 Ramlila has used modern technology, elaborate stage arrangements and expressive performances to present episodes from the Ramayana in a contemporary format. The organisers aim to familiarise the younger generation with Indian culture, traditional values and the ideals associated with Lord Ram.
