Jugal Hansraj reunites with Shekhar Kapur for ‘Masoom: The Next Generation’ after 43 years

Actor Jugal Hansraj is set to return to the world of Masoom more than four decades after his acting debut in Shekhar Kapur’s acclaimed 1983 drama, reuniting with the filmmaker and actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi for Masoom: The Next Generation.

Hansraj, who played Rahul, the young son of Naseeruddin Shah’s character in the original film, has joined the cast of the spiritual sequel. His performance as the innocent Rahul earned him widespread appreciation and became a defining moment of his early career.

The reunion marks Hansraj’s return to the franchise 43 years after the original film’s release. He will once again work with Kapur, who directed him in his acting debut, alongside Shah and Azmi, who have already been confirmed to reprise their roles.

“There is something profoundly beautiful about coming home, not to a place, but to a story that has stayed alive in people’s hearts for decades,” Kapur said.

He described Hansraj’s return as an emotional and fulfilling moment, adding that bringing him back together with Shah and Azmi reflects how relationships created through cinema can transcend generations.

Hansraj said he was delighted when Kapur approached him for the new film, describing Masoom as an integral part of his life and identity.

The actor recalled how audiences continue to associate him with the original film even decades later, saying people still approach him to talk about the movie and its popular song “Lakdi Ki Kathi”.

“Masoom: The Next Generation” is described as a spiritual sequel to Kapur’s iconic family drama. The film will explore themes of changing family dynamics, identity and relationships across generations.

The project features an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Jugal Hansraj, Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, Vivaan Shah and Kaveri Kapur, Shekhar Kapur’s daughter.

Academy Award-winning composer A R Rahman has joined the project as composer and co-producer.

Kapur, who is known for films including Masoom, Mr India, Bandit Queen and Elizabeth, returns to the intimate, emotionally driven storytelling that defined the original film.

The new project aims to carry forward Masoom’s emotional legacy while exploring family relationships and generational change through a contemporary lens.
