Ashwani held with pistol allegedly used in Mansa shooting; protests continue

Chandigarh: The main accused in the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota was nabbed in Rajasthan late Tuesday night after allegedly fleeing following the shooting, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.

The accused, Ashwani, was arrested with a pistol allegedly used in the crime.

Two people have been apprehended in connection with the case, including one suspected of helping Ashwani flee after the incident, according to the supplied report.

Jhota was shot dead in Mansa on Tuesday following a confrontation with a chemist over the alleged sale of intoxicating medicines. The incident was livestreamed on Jhota’s Facebook page, triggering outrage.

The killing sparked protests in Mansa, with demonstrators raising slogans against the police and demanding action against those responsible. Activists and politicians also reached the town to join the protests.

Tensions escalated as protesters allegedly vandalised the chemist’s shop and damaged a fire tender. The police deployed additional personnel across Mansa district to maintain law and order.

Protesters have formed a committee to seek justice and hold talks with the authorities. Markets in Mansa were also shut in the protest, according to the earlier report.

The arrest follows an assurance by Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Chaudhary that the accused would be arrested within 24 hours.

According to the earlier account, Jhota had confronted the medical store owner over allegations that intoxicating medicines had been sold to an elderly man. The confrontation allegedly escalated before shots were fired. Two other people were reportedly injured and admitted to hospital.
