Heavy rain disrupts traffic on 56 roads in Kullu

Heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district on Tuesday disrupted traffic on 56 roads and affected five electricity transformers, while landslides in several areas raised concerns over the safety of residential houses.

According to the District Disaster Management Authority, 20 roads in Banjar subdivision were blocked due to landslides, while 16 roads were affected in Nirmand, 12 in Kullu and eight in Ani.

The administration has deployed machinery to restore road connectivity. However, continuous rainfall and debris falling from hills are hampering restoration work.

In Ani, a large boulder fell from a hillside near the main market bus stand and hit a vehicle. No one was inside the vehicle at the time.

In another incident near Teshan Mor in Barad, a moving car was hit by debris after a portion of the hillside collapsed. Two people were injured in the incident and are undergoing treatment at the Ani hospital.

Meanwhile, residents of Bakshahal village in the Sainj Valley of Banjar are facing growing fears amid ongoing landslides.

Around 11 houses in the village are reportedly at risk as the ground continues to slide. Several parts of the village experienced landslides and land subsidence following heavy rain in recent days, threatening houses and raising fears of displacement among residents.

The village’s connecting road has also been blocked by landslides, causing difficulties for residents.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Surjeet Singh Rathore, who is holding additional charge of the Kullu Deputy Commissioner, said several roads had been affected by the rain and that restoration work had been initiated.

He appealed to residents and tourists to travel only after assessing weather conditions and advised people to stay away from rivers and streams amid the ongoing rainfall.
