Gulveer wins silver as India bags medals in athletics, table tennis

India had a mixed outing on the seventh day of the Asian Games 2026 on Friday, with Gulveer Singh winning silver in the men’s 10,000 m, while Manpreet Kaur and the mixed doubles pair of Manush Shah and Diya Chitale secured bronze medals in athletics and table tennis, respectively. Indian pole vaulter Baranica Elangovan won a historic bronze medal in the women’s pole vault final at the 2026 Asian Games.

In the women’s shot put, China’s Song Jiayuan won gold and compatriot Zhang Linru took silver, while India’s Manpreet Kaur finished third.

In table tennis, Manush Shah and Diya Chitale won the bronze medal in mixed doubles after losing their semifinal to China’s Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha.

Gulveer Singh added a silver in the men’s 10,000 m, finishing behind Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew.

Badminton brought a setback for India as defending men’s doubles champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a first-round exit. The Indian pair lost to Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Peeratchai Sukphun in three games.

In squash, India won three of its four quarterfinal matches and advanced to the semifinals, while one Indian player lost to Pakistan.

Both Indian kabaddi teams also won their respective semifinal matches and will play their finals tomorrow.

In surfing, Sugar Shanti Gayen and Kamali Prakash competed in the women’s shortboard Round 1 in their respective heats.

The results made it a mixed day for India, with medals coming in athletics and table tennis, while the squash and kabaddi teams remained in contention for further honours.
