Fresh landslide near Kangra museum in Dharamshala raises safety concerns

Fresh landslides triggered by continuous rainfall struck the rear side of the Kangra Museum in Dharamshala on Wednesday, raising fresh concerns over the safety of the historic site and nearby areas. Debris and a large tree rolled down the hillside, though no casualties or damage to vehicles were reported.

Home Guard jawan Kulwant Singh said the landslide occurred at around 8.35 am and authorities were informed immediately. He noted that while a retaining wall was built after a similar landslide last year, the work remains incomplete. He warned that continued rainfall could pose a greater threat to the museum complex.

Dharamshala Bus Stand In-charge Vinod Chandel said small stones began falling between 8.15 am and 8.20 am before the hillside gave way. A large tree also collapsed, but no vehicles or people were hit as parked vehicles had already been shifted to a safer location.

Kangra Museum Curator Dr Ritu Malkotia said the administration and concerned departments were alerted soon after the incident. She said the latest landslide has created a new risk on the bus stand side, adding that the museum building and its priceless historical artifacts require urgent protection measures.

Deputy Commissioner Kangra Hemraj Bairwa said the Public Works Department had already begun restoration work after the previous landslide. Following the latest incident, he directed the department to reassess the site immediately and submit a report on urgent safety measures to prevent further damage.
