Chandigarh, October 15
The family of Y. Puran Kumar, Haryana’s Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) who died by suicide in Chandigarh last week, has given consent for an autopsy. Officials said his cremation will be held at 4 pm on Wednesday at the Cremation Ground in Sector-25, Chandigarh.
Puran Kumar allegedly shot himself with his service pistol on October 7. He left behind a nine-page note naming 15 serving and retired police and IAS officers, accusing them of caste bias and discrimination. The Haryana IAS Officers Association shared the information about the cremation. In a statement signed by Amit K. Agrawal, the association extended condolences to the family.
The Chandigarh Police had earlier approached the local court after repeated requests to the family to allow the autopsy went unanswered. Investigators argued that the post-mortem was essential to preserve forensic evidence and maintain the integrity of the probe.

Authorities have also sought directions for the recovery of the deceased officer’s laptop and official records from the Haryana government to assist the investigation.
The case took a dramatic turn on Tuesday after Sandeep Kumar, an assistant sub-inspector probing corruption allegations against Puran Kumar, allegedly died by suicide in Rohtak. Police said he shot himself with his service weapon and left behind a three-page note and a video message accusing the late ADGP of corruption and abuse of power.
Meanwhile, a member of the 31-member committee, Resham Singh, said the post-mortem was conducted on Wednesday and the body would be brought to the family residence in Sector 24 before the cremation ceremony at 4 pm. “We are grateful to everyone — political leaders, community members and the media — who stood with us,” Singh said. “But despite everything, we have not got justice yet. We have decided not to hold today’s planned protest,” he added.
