Rajjit Singh had cases linked to alleged drug trafficking, extortion and disproportionate assets filed agianst him

Patiala, September 24

Dismissed former Punjab Police AIG Rajjit Singh surrendered before the Patiala police after remaining absconding for nearly six years and was subsequently formally arrested, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav confirmed on Thursday.  Rajjit Singh had been facing cases registered in connection with allegations of drug trafficking, extortion and possession of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, according to the source material.

He was dismissed from the police service in April 2019, following investigations in which his name surfaced in connection with dismissed inspector Inderjit Singh and an alleged drug trafficking and extortion network.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court-ordered investigation had examined allegations concerning Inderjit Singh and the alleged role of senior police officials. Subsequently, the Vigilance Bureau and Special Task Force registered separate cases against Rajjit Singh, according to the source. 

After the High Court rejected his bail plea, Rajjit Singh went absconding. Authorities also issued a lookout circular against him as they continued efforts to trace him. 

He surrendered before the Supreme Court in connection with the cases. The Supreme Court had earlier directed him to surrender before the concerned authorities, according to recent reports.

Police formally took him into custody after the surrender. Current reports also said DGP Gaurav Yadav confirmed the arrest.

Officials said further investigation and legal proceedings in the cases are underway.
