New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday signed a Rs 661.50 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) to procure BrahMos fire-control systems and launchers for Indian Navy ships. The contract was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi. The procurement comes under the government’s Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, which promotes the use of indigenously designed and manufactured defence equipment.
The project has a minimum 68 per cent indigenous content and is expected to involve several Indian industries, including micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). The government said the project would also generate employment over the next three years.
The BrahMos system is fitted on several frontline Indian Navy warships and serves as the Navy’s primary surface-to-surface missile system for maritime strike operations. It can engage both land and sea targets at extended ranges and at supersonic speeds. The contract is part of efforts to increase domestic production of advanced defence technology and strengthen India’s maritime capabilities.
