CPunjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has pledged to fiercely oppose the Union government’s proposed delimitation, calling it an attempt to silence opposition parties and tilt electoral advantages toward the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking at a conference in Chennai hosted by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Mann accused the BJP-led central government of manipulating parliamentary seat distribution to consolidate power. He argued that the move disproportionately reduces seats in opposition-stronghold states while increasing representation in BJP-dominated regions.
“This shameful act of the BJP to reduce seats where they can’t win is undemocratic, and we won’t allow their nefarious designs to weaken democracy,” Mann said.
The Punjab CM criticized the rationale behind the proposal, stating that South Indian states, despite effectively implementing population control measures, are being penalized with fewer seats. He claimed that the BJP aims to increase the number of constituencies in Hindi-speaking states like Uttar Pradesh, suggesting its seat tally could rise from 80 to over 140.
